what it is:
My work with couples is grounded in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theory, including contemporary psychoanalytic approaches to understanding couple relationships. Rather than focusing only on communication skills or resolving the immediate conflict, we become curious about what is happening between two people: the roles each partner may find themselves taking on, the expectations and fears they bring into the relationship, and the patterns they may repeatedly create together without fully realizing it.
my approach:
My approach is influenced by psychoanalytic thinkers, whose work considers the unconscious ways partners may evoke, carry, or express different emotional experiences for one another. In therapy, we work to make these patterns more visible and understandable so that each partner has greater freedom to relate to the other as a separate, complex person rather than remaining caught in familiar roles.
who it's for:
This approach may be particularly helpful for couples who find themselves having the same arguments repeatedly, feeling increasingly distant or misunderstood, struggling with intimacy or trust, or falling into familiar roles that neither partner quite knows how to change. Rather than focusing only on resolving the immediate conflict, psychoanalytic couples therapy helps us become curious about what may be happening beneath these patterns—including the unspoken expectations, fears, vulnerabilities, and past relational experiences that each partner brings into the relationship.
